The Importance of Mothers
No language can express the power and beauty and heroism and majesty of a mother’s love.
Edwin Chapin
It is impossible to overestimate the value of mothers to children, family, community and society. A mother’s impact is as profound as it is transcendent for those blessed enough to have such a parent in their life. Recognizing that words may fail us in fully capturing the importance of mothers, let’s, nevertheless, try.
Why Mothers Matter
- A mother’s unconditional love is the foundation upon which children are able to proceed confidently into life and manage themselves through the sadness, failure, disappointment and hurt they will inevitably experience.
- Children who receive a mother’s love early in childhood are more likely to develop a larger hippocampus (the learning, memory and stress response center of the brain), as well as become more empathetic adults.
- Mothers are a child’s first teacher, from counting numbers and reading to learning how to navigate the complexities of social interactions, friendships and sharing.
- Mothers make numerous and incalculable sacrifices to protect their children and foster their success.
- A mother is the first and most enduring listener in a child’s life, always taking seriously his or her fears and hopes, and patiently answering endless questions about life.
- When a child feels abandoned by the world, a mother is always there.
- A mother takes care of the home like no one else.
- A mother supports and encourages a child’s wildest ambitions, helping that child reach its fullest potential.
- Mothers organize and take action to improve schools and support children’s activities. They are the backbone of community groups that enhance community living and the lives of its members.
- Mothers are role models who offer lessons that last a lifetime on the values of kindness, hard work, commitment and love.
Edwin Chapin was right—language is inadequate to the task of expressing the power and beauty of a mother’s love. However, when a child expresses heartfelt words of gratitude and admiration to his or her mother, they can take on a force equally and indescribably powerful. Let’s recognize the hardworking, selfless mothers this Mother’s Day with more than a plant, but rather the appreciation of the vital role they masterfully play in life.
